Project Description

The aim of this project is to tackle a focussed range of issues affecting children and young people who:-

• have witnessed or experienced domestic abuse within their home setting
• are now in safe situations but affected by previously witnessing domestic abuse
• are experiencing or have experienced domestic abuse within their own intimate relationships.

Domestic abuse not only has damaging effects on the victim but also children who are often present when domestic abuse takes place and who have to suffer the consequences. Children can be affected in many ways by living with domestic violence/abuse. Research shows that when growing up in a violent household, violence can become normalised behaviour, with some children often going on to commit other violent crimes or become domestic abuse perpetrators themselves.

Project Objectives

1. Provision of practical support concerning the physical safety of children and young people who have witnessed or experienced domestic abuse within their home setting.
2. Children and young people who are now in safe situations but affected by previously witnessing domestic abuse can be affected by low self-esteem or confidence, poor social skills, lower than average academic achievement leading to reduced life or career opportunities, behavioural issues, lack of trust or inability to trust, distorted attitudes or beliefs – gender roles and what is acceptable behaviour, low expectancy in terms of personal goals in life or career, increased vulnerability toward abusive relationships (as victims or perpetrators), mental health issues and/or physical health issues.

3. Recent research indicates that the issue of children and young people who are experiencing or have experienced domestic abuse within their own intimate relationships is increasing (girls aged 16-19 are now the group most at risk of domestic abuse).

These objectives will be delivered through structured targeting of children and young people – schools, youth organisations and community projects such as young homeless, pupil referral units, Connexions etc. to deliver group and one-to-one work:-

• Awareness raising re healthy relationships versus abusive relationships
• Challenging attitudes around gender roles, looking at external factors which influence these attitudes – early life experiences, role models (positive and negative), media, peer pressure
• Provide skills, tools and coping strategies which promote healthy choices and alternatives to becoming victims and/or perpetrators
• Gender specific groups delivering the above
• Positive activities, broadening experience, choice, options

Lancaster City Council leads a partnership of experienced professionals and organisations working in the Lancaster District area.

European intervention rates

The European Commission will provide up to 80% of the total project budget.

The deadline for the presentation of the abstracts for the International Conference “The Future of Education” which will take place in Florence, (Italy), on 7 – 8 June 2012 was postponed.

The objective of the conference is to promote the sharing of good practice and transnational cooperation in the field of innovation for Education. The conference is also an excellent opportunity for the presentation of previous and current projects in the educational field.

The Call for Papers is addressed to teachers and experts as well as to coordinators of educational projects and initiatives.

We encourage you to submit an abstract of a paper to present during the conference. The abstract should be written in English (150 – 500 words) and sent via e-mail to edu_future no later than 30 January 2012. Lo scenario europeo si presenta oggi drammaticamente improntato alla ricerca di regole stringenti in materia di disciplina di bilancio e rigore finanziario, senza alcuna prospettiva per il rilancio della crescita, senza alcuna attenzione al lavoro, alla solidarietà sociale, allo sviluppo sostenibile. Questo approccio rigorista contenuto nel progetto di trattato internazionale senza avere serie contropartite per la crescita condanna alla recessione e alla marginalizzazione economica e politica dell’intera Europa.

Cos’è il GECT?

Il G.E.C.T. (Gruppo europeo di cooperazione territoriale) è lo strumento creato dall’U.E. (Reg.to n. 1082/2006) per promuovere la cooperazione transfrontaliera. È dotato di personalità giuridica ed opera nell’ambito della politica di coesione economica e sociale che, in seguito al trattato di Lisbona, ha oggi una dimensione “territoriale”. Ad essa si riferisce anche l’art. 174 del Trattato, che rivolge un’attenzione particolare “alle regioni che presentano gravi e permanenti svantaggi naturali”, fra cui le regioni insulari.

I lavori svolti durante il Convegno hanno prodotto sguardi e inquadrature qualificate per inquadrare i percorsi necessari per l’emancipazione del Mediterraneo, partendo dall’urgenza di trovare nuove letture di scenario che risolvano ed allontanino le dimensioni di retaggio post-coloniale e le recenti esperienze nel Maghreb di instaurazione e sostegno a dittature per mantenere un rapporto di sfruttamento dei poteri nazionali sui territori.

In questo modo il Governatore Raffaele Lombardo si è espresso di fronte al Ministro Giulio Terzi di Sant’Agata, che a sua volta ha sollecitato una riflessione sul significato dei cambiamenti introdotti in Medio Oriente dalla “primavera araba”, evocando lo “Spirito di Sicilia”, riconnettendo alla tradizione che ascende a Federico II e alla Scuola Poetica Siciliana il desiderio di condividere il sapere, la cultura e l’arte in una koiné, una costruzione comune che allora coinvolgeva la dimensione latina, greca, bizantina, ebraica ed araba ed oggi si apre al mondo globalizzato.

L’ambasciatore Vattani, moderatore del convegno, ha messo in luce l’aspetto operativo e metodologico, affermando che i criteri della cooperazione territoriale vanno interpretati come gli strumenti effettivi, operativi di ogni azione positiva per il cambiamento.

Tutti gli interventi che si sono succeduti durante i lavori del convegno hanno trovato convergenza nel puntare l’attenzione sul ruolo della società civile come espressione del nuovo pluralismo democratico, sull’importanza dei percorsi di comunicazione che attengono al piano della nuova espressione sul web e sulla regia che le istituzioni devono saper operare per gestire il cambiamento. Accogliere i nuovi sviluppi democratici che possono rendere l’area del Mediterraneo più sicura e più avanzata sia nel senso dei diritti civili e politici che delle transazioni economiche, significa produrre le condizioni per uno sviluppo socialmente sostenibile e rendere interessante l’area in prospettiva di un futuro ormai presente.
